Description of DVS-Netmon
(Latest Version 1.2):
Effective analysis of network traffic continues to be a critical element of any company's competitiveness in today's dynamic market. The next generation of networks presents a whole new set of challenges. These networks are faster, support vast number of dynamic connections with varying quality-of-service and have access to more usage data than any previous types of systems.
DVS has designed and developed the next generation of PC based network monitors, which provide real-time monitoring of network traffic and then analyzing the traffic based on users' input.
The Network Monitor product is developed into two distinct modules - Packet Snooper and Packet Analyzer.
This module snoops all the ethernet packets traversing on a physical segment of Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) LAN. It stores all the required fields from each packet (like source and destination IP address, source and destination MAC Address, protocol type, source port, destination port and a timestamp) in a database. This code is written in ANSI C and is designed to run on Linux, Windows 95/98/NT/2000.
This module intelligently analyzes the packet information stored by the snooper in database, based on user input. Analyzer displays the results in various types of outputs - on Line Reports, daily Reports or evenly in form of intuitive pie/bar charts.
These reports contains the on line information regarding total Number of bytes sent by a machine, IP address of the machine, host name of the machine and percentage of IP traffic generated. These reports also reflect current load in the network in terms of applications (ftp, telnet, http, etc.) and in terms of total traffic generated by each machine.
The daily reports contains the daily information regarding total number of bytes transferred between each combination of source and destination, start Time, total Bytes sent and total number of bytes FTP/TELNET/HTTP sent.
